I’m Sonia Matas, an illustrator and freelance artist based in Murcia, Spain. I graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Murcia in 2011 and have been working professionally as an illustrator since 2008.

Over the years I’ve worked on many different kinds of projects, although most of my professional work is currently focused on editorial illustration, particularly comic book covers. I’ve created artwork for publishers such as Zenescope Entertainment, Dynamite Entertainment, Image Comics and Space Between Entertainment, as well as collaborating with other international clients and projects.

My work revolves especially around colour and the female figure, which has been one of my main forms of expression for many years. I combine traditional and digital techniques depending on what each image needs, and in recent years I’ve increasingly returned to drawing and traditional painting, which I also use for many of my covers.

Alongside commissioned work, I have always developed my own personal projects. An important part of this work eventually takes shape as books and self-published projects, where I can approach images in a more narrative way and bring together ideas that have often developed over several years.

I have also taught courses and workshops in illustration, watercolour and digital painting, taken part in exhibitions and events, and regularly attend conventions in Spain and abroad.

I currently combine client work with personal projects and the creation of self-published artbooks.
